Marvel Cinematic Universe Star Gemma Chan Takes on Multiple Roles, Showcasing Her Versatility as an Actress
News - 12 January 2024
Most actors who are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) tend to stick to playing one role within the franchise. However, there are instances where an actor takes on multiple roles that are completely different from one another. Gemma Chan, a talented British actress known for her work in Crazy Rich Asians, is one such example.
Chan has made appearances in two MCU films, portraying distinct characters in each. Chan's journey in the entertainment industry began as a model before she transitioned into acting. Her acting career took off in 2006 with the miniseries When Evil Calls, followed by appearances in various British films and series.
However, it was her role as Astrid Leong-Teo in the 2018 hit Crazy Rich Asians that propelled her to international stardom. Initially offered the lead role, Chan opted for the intriguing character of Astrid instead. In Captain Marvel, released a year after Crazy Rich Asians, Chan took on the role of Minn-Erva, a skilled sniper affiliated with the Kree Starforce.
As the former standout of the Kree Starforce, Minn-Erva faces an internal struggle when Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) joins the team. Chan's portrayal of Minn-Erva involved extensive prosthetic makeup, requiring four layers of airbrush paint that took hours to apply. Despite the intricate makeup, Chan's performance in the film was notable, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
Fast forward to 2021, Chan graced the screen in Eternals as Sersi, a member of the immortal Eternals with the ability to manipulate matter through physical contact. According to MCU producer Kevin Feige, Sersi serves as the main character in the film, showcasing Chan's range as an actress. Unlike her role in Captain Marvel, Sersi allowed Chan to explore a character with depth and compassion, challenging traditional superhero stereotypes.
Director ChloƩ Zhao praised Chan for bringing a nuanced and empathetic portrayal to the character, redefining what it means to be a heroic figure in the genre. As for future MCU appearances, it remains uncertain whether Chan will return to the franchise. If she were to come back, it is more likely she would reprise her role as Sersi rather than Minn-Erva.
While a sequel to Eternals has been speculated, no official announcements have been made regarding Chan's involvement. In the meantime, audiences can witness Chan's talent in films like Don't Worry Darling and The Creator, as well as in the upcoming sequels to Crazy Rich Asians. For those eager to see Chan in action in the MCU, Captain Marvel and Eternals are both available for streaming on Disney+.
Whether Chan graces the MCU once again or ventures into new projects, her captivating performances continue to leave a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
