Exploring the Continuing Legacy of Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy Films
News - 4 September 2023
When discussing superhero movies, the first things that come to mind for many people are the Marvel and DC films that dominate the genre. However, there are other successful superhero films that are not based on characters from these two comic book giants. One such example is Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy, a unique and visually stunning take on the superhero genre.
Ron Perlman, who portrayed the titular character in Del Toro's Hellboy films, recently expressed his desire to return to complete the trilogy. Del Toro, known for his work on films like Pan's Labyrinth and the recent Nightmare Alley, directed both Hellboy and its sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Despite the success of the first two films, a third installment in the trilogy never materialized.
In 2019, a reboot of the Hellboy franchise was released, with David Harbour taking over the role of Hellboy. The film was met with negative reviews and poor box office performance, leading some to question whether now is the time for Del Toro to return to the franchise and complete his original vision for the trilogy.During an interview on the Geek House Show to promote his new film, How I Got There, Perlman discussed the possibility of returning to the Hellboy franchise.
He expressed his enthusiasm for completing the trilogy, stating, "If we were to do the third movie in the trilogy, I would love to do that, yes. It was supposed to be three movies, so I would go back and do it if we could finish the trilogy. But those are the only circumstances.
"Del Toro's Hellboy 3 never came to fruition due to a combination of the director's busy schedule and the high budget required for the film. The escalating costs of production made it increasingly difficult for studios to justify funding the project, ultimately leading to its cancellation.Despite the setback of Del Toro's third Hellboy film, fans of the franchise have something to look forward to.
Another reboot of the Hellboy series is in the works, titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man and starring Jack Kesy. The film is scheduled for release in theaters on May 30, although the ongoing strikes in Hollywood could potentially impact this release date.It remains to be seen whether Del Toro will ever have the opportunity to complete his Hellboy trilogy as originally planned.
Perlman's willingness to return to the role of Hellboy suggests that there is still interest and enthusiasm for the project among the cast and crew. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the upcoming reboot and hope for the possibility of a return to Del Toro's vision for the franchise in the future.
